Static Location Sharing

Static Location Sharing turns your current location into a cross-platform map link. It is useful for sending a meeting point, a parked-car location, or any other place that does not need continuous updates. You can currently copy a Google Maps link or an Amap link.

How to use it

  1. On Home, wait for the app to obtain your current location.
  2. Under Location Sharing, tap Share Location.
  3. Choose Copy Google Maps Link or Copy Amap Link.
  4. After “Copied to clipboard” appears, paste the link into Messages, Mail, or another communication app and send it.
  5. The recipient can tap the link to view the location in a browser or the corresponding map app.

If Share Location is temporarily unavailable, the app has not obtained a current location yet. Make sure Location Services and location access for GPS Toolbox are enabled, then wait for valid coordinates to appear on Home. See Permissions & Troubleshooting for more help.

Coordinates and map compatibility

  • Shared links use the original WGS84 coordinate received from system location services. The Coordinate System display setting does not alter the shared position.
  • Google Maps receives the location in latitude-longitude order.
  • Amap receives it in longitude-latitude order with WGS84 explicitly declared as the input coordinate system, then handles the position for display.
  • Link coordinates use six decimal places. Altitude, accuracy, notes, and movement history are not included.

TIP

Map imagery, address lookup, and marker placement may have some error. Before arriving, confirm the location against nearby roads and landmarks and consider the accuracy shown on Home.

Privacy and the difference from live sharing

Static Location Sharing only writes the generated map link to the system clipboard. It does not create a sharing group or continuously upload your location through the GPS Toolbox location-sharing server. The position does not update as you move; recipients see the coordinate captured when you copied the link.

To let companions continuously view one another's positions, use Live Location Sharing. Before sending a link, make sure you trust the recipients and the communication service: anyone who obtains the link can view the location coordinates it contains.

Location and sensor readings are for reference only. Always assess your surroundings.
