Data, Import & Export
The Data tab displays saved point-marking, distance, area, altitude, track, and speed records. Only categories that currently contain data appear at the top.
View and edit a record
- Open Data.
- Select a category at the top.
- Tap a record card to open its details.
- Choose Edit from the upper-right menu, then save again when finished.
Each card shows its name, saved time, and a type-specific summary such as point count, total distance, area and perimeter, or the most recent speed.
Delete a record
Open the record, choose Delete from the upper-right menu, and confirm. This removes the record and related app-managed attachments. Copies already exported, written to Photos, synced to iCloud, or saved by another person are not deleted at the same time.
Export
From a saved record, choose Export and select a format. The system share sheet lets you save to Files or send the file to an app of your choice.
| Format | Best for | Retention |
|---|---|---|
GPS Toolbox (.gpstoolbox) | Full backup or migration between GPS Toolbox installations | Preserves records, point fields, notes, and media attachments |
GeoJSON (.geojson) | GIS and web maps | Preserves geometry and rich attributes, but does not package media files |
CSV (.csv) | Spreadsheet analysis | Preserves per-point fields; not suitable for complex attachments |
GPX (.gpx) | Fitness devices and track apps | Focuses on tracks, routes, and waypoints; app-specific fields may be lost |
KML (.kml) | Google Earth and map tools | Preserves map geometry; app-specific fields may be lost |
WKT (.wkt) | GIS and database geometry exchange | Primarily geometry; business metadata and attachments are not fully retained |
For a lossless restore, prefer GPS Toolbox format and protect the exported file. An export may contain precise locations, timestamps, notes, and photos. Verify the recipient before sending it.
Import
- Open Data and tap the import button in the lower-right corner.
- Select the record type you want to create.
- Tap Choose File and select a file using the system picker.
- The app identifies the format, imports matching records, and shows the result.
Supported formats include GeoJSON, GPX, KML, CSV, WKT, GPS Toolbox packages, and recognizable JSON files. The selected record type must match the geometry in the file. For example, importing track data as an area may fail or produce an unexpected result.
Back up before importing
Import creates new records and does not automatically merge or deduplicate names. Export a GPS Toolbox backup before a large import.
Where data is stored
- By default, formal records are stored in the app’s local SwiftData database.
- Drafts and unsaved media stay in local app support storage and are not included in iCloud sync.
- After you enable iCloud sync and restart, structured records may use a private CloudKit database and formal attachments may use the app’s iCloud container.
- Export destinations are chosen in the system share sheet and are no longer controlled by the app afterward.
